About Dan

Welcome:

Dan Friedell, a former sports editor at USA TODAY, has covered athletic events around the world for over a decade. He’s covered four Olympics and written about events ranging from Babe Ruth league baseball in the Boston suburbs to pro cycling in the hills above Valencia, Spain. He’s covered basketball games in Madison Square Garden and Monday Night Football in Philadelphia. He’s also written hundreds of stories about high school sports in New York, New Jersey, North Carolina and Northern Virginia.

Dan prides himself in telling good stories. Whether it’s a freshman cross-country runner or an NFL tight end, he cuts through the play-by-play and gets to the story behind the athlete who just won a race or scored the winning touchdown.

Dan has an undergraduate degree in American Studies and Journalism from Brandeis University, a Master’s degree from the Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University and is a member of the adjunct faculty at the University of Maryland’s Philip Merrill College of Journalism.

His work has appeared in The Washington Post, USA TODAY, ESPN The Magazine, The Charlotte Observer, The Auburn (N.Y.) Citizen, The Baltimore Sun, VeloNews, MLB.com, Bike.com, Patch.com and been carried by the Associated Press and The Sports Network news services.

Dan has also done freelance work as a content manager and content creator for organizations including 4-H and The Society for Neuroscience.
