Michael Pineda interview in ESPN the Magazine

ESPN the Magazine asked me to visit Michael Pineda back in May when the Mariners were in Baltimore playing the Orioles.

"When I knew" featuring Michael Pineda

Only 22, Pineda is learning how to speak English, so we did the interview in a mix of English and Spanish. He turned out to be eager to tell his story about this big game in the minors four years ago when he pitched a complete game one-hitter with 14 strikeouts.

This season, Pineda has been one of the revelations in the American League, posting a 7-4 record with 85 strikeouts in just over 88 innings for the Mariners.

Great Bridge wins Va. state high school baseball championship

I covered South County High School (Fairfax County, Va.) for the second half of their baseball season, writing a feature about how the team meshed once all the players entered middle school and began playing together instead of against each other (as they had in little league).

I followed the Stallions through the playoffs, which included a Patriot District title, a Northern Region title and a pair of wins in the state playoffs.

They reached the title game against Great Bridge with a 28-0 record and were looking to cap their season with a victory. But South County, a team known for its great hitting, went cold in the championship game and lost, 5-3.

TD Bank International Cycling Championship

I worked on the “bug box,” a device made by TV Graphics, that allows a broadcaster to keep a running clock/scoreboard, but also drop down some editorial information to tell the story of the event.

Take a look at the video below for an example and some highlights:

Writing for the Web, why it’s important for aspiring journalists

A year ago I was job hunting. Turned out someone I play trivia with is a higher-up with a tech company in my area. So I asked if I could send along my resume and a link to my website. The website was, admittedly, very basic. My name, a link to my resume, a list of work samples. That’s about it. I embedded a Twitter widget, too.

The message I got back from my trivia teammate was like a cold shower. It sent a shiver up my spine. Here’s what I was told: Continue reading

  2. A book by Jets’ coach Rex Ryan landed in the No. 11 spot on the New York Times’ nonfiction best-seller list this week. Knowing Ryan’s competitive nature, expect him to start trashing the No. 1 author on the list, Tina Fey, any day now.
